In 1905, W. Graham Kerr began the family firm of Kerr Brothers with a horse-drawn hearse and rented carriages. Prior to that first business on North Broadway in Lexington, he and his twin brother, F. Skinner, has practiced as Kerr Brothers Undertakers in North Middleton, KY.
The brothers were backed by their father, William H. Kerr, a farmer and standard breed horse owner and trainer. He kept a stable that still stands at 171 Saunier Avenue in Lexington.
Eventually, the family firm included two more brothers, Clarence and Harvey, and their sister, Lucy Kerr Bush. The family has proudly offered funeral services ever since.
While heavily involved in community affairs, including government, health-oriented activities, and the city's first horse-drawn ambulance, our company has continued to grow.
In 1935, the business moved to its current, historic home on East Main Street. It was expanded in 1954, and a chapel was added in 1967 to provide home-like comfort for bereaved families.
Now under the leadership of John Kerr Jr and John Kerr III, the firm has added a second funeral home on Harrodsburg Road. In 1997, Billy J. Shell - who was a Kerr Brothers licensee for 15 years - became a partner in the firm.
Our company draws on decades of experience and keeps up with the area's constantly changing population and funerary customs to offer a range of services.
